The back-to-back celebration focused on the important role that millions of small-scale fishers, fish farmers, and fish workers play in food security; as well as improving the awareness and to promote collaborative action among all concerned agencies in solving the issues surrounding the fisheries sector.
During the IYAFA culmination, fisherfolk leaders presented to the government the 10-Point Philippine Blue Agenda on Sustainable Fisheries as an appeal for support for its realization. In response, the national government agency reaffirmed its commitment to rally behind the fulfillment of the Blue Agenda.
The celebration was organized by national fisherfolk alliance Katipunan ng mga Artisanong Mangingisda sa Pilipinas (KKAMPI), Pangingisda Natin Gawing Tama (PaNaGaT), Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN-FAO), Rare, and Oceana Philippines, and in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
