The UN General Assembly declared June 5 as the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUUF) to address the global issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing practices. IUUF remains a threat to the sustainable management and conservation of our marine resources and consequently, to the attainment of food security. Globally, IUUF has always been cited among the top reasons for the decline of fish stocks.
The DA-BFAR has been consistent in intensifying its efforts to address IUU fishing in the Philippine waters. This is achieved through various initiatives such as the Integrated Marine Environment Monitoring System (IMEMS) project, an innovative, optimized, and integrated monitoring system that allows the government to track and communicate with Philippine-flagged fishing vessels in real time on a national scale.
