SARANGANI PROVINCE, 23 January 2025—Under the Special Area for Agricultural Development Program Phase 2, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) XII launched the FY 2025 Fisheries Field School (FFS) in Brgy. Baluntay, Alabel, Sarangani Province on 22 January 2025 with the program’s first module, “Tilapia Production in Freshwater Pond.” This initiative was spearheaded by the BFAR XII SAAD Provincial Program Management Office, headed by Ms. Zenaida A. Dangkalan.


The activity revolved around delivering practical education on sustainable aquaculture practices while introducing innovative techniques and technologies within the field. It benefited twenty-two (22) members of the Baluntay-Tokawal Agri-Fisheries Association (BaToAFA). Participants engaged in theoretical and hands-on training, equipping them with essential knowledge to improve their aquaculture skills and support socioeconomic growth within their community.


Municipal Agriculturist Ms. Giselle C. Gestupa delivered a stirring message, reinforcing the LGU’s commitment to food security and the welfare of stakeholders while underscoring the significance of collaboration between the LGU, BFAR, and BaToAFA.


Ms. Gemma Chyrel G. Moreno, Chief of the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division (RFTFCD) of BFAR XII, expressed her optimism regarding the program. She noted that the Fisheries Field School is crucial for enhancing aquaculture techniques and fostering empowerment among fisherfolk.


The first module, facilitated by Ms. Charlene C. Radin, covered essential topics such as the basic biology of tilapia and its ecological requirements, setting the stage for impactful learning and application.


With participation from notable representatives of BFAR XII SAAD Program Management Offices and local community leaders, the launch of the Fisheries Field School marks a pivotal advancement in BFAR XII’s efforts to enhance sustainable fishing practices and empower local fisherfolk through education and training.


As BaToAFA members embark on this learning journey, they stand ready to apply their skills toward the sustainable development of aquaculture in Sarangani Province.
