PRESS RELEASE

28 APRIL 2016

DA-BFAR SHOWS NEARLY COMPLETED FISHERIES COMPLEX, BREAKS GROUND FOR RESEARCH LABS

On the third and final phase of the construction of the National Fisheries Complex, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) breaks ground on the site where the agency’s new research laboratories will rise.

The two (2) five-storey structures will be an addition to the other two buildings already undergoing construction on a 10, 751 square meters lot near the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) in Brgy. Vasra, Visayas Avenue, Quezon City.

“After 69 years, BFAR will finally have a home of its own. This entails further improvement to our front line services for our fisheries stakeholders and the general public as well,” Agriculture Undersecretary for Fisheries and BFAR national director Asis G. Perez said.

The buildings will house the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute’s (NFRDI) facilities for Oceanography and Fish Biology studies; Seafood Safety and Quality and; Fish and Fish Product Development and Processing. A library and knowledge management center will also be put up as a repository of fisheries researches and scientific information.

In June 2015, the construction of the Main and Annex buildings began. Aside from BFAR, the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) will also hold office in the Fisheries Complex. The buildings were designed by Palafox Associates, an internationally-acclaimed, Filipino firm known for innovative and sustainable architecture.

BFAR targets the completion of the Main and Annex buildings before December this year. Perez said the Fisheries Complex is expected to be fully operational by 2017.
