BFAR 12 Spearheads Distribution of Bangus Fingerlings to Cotabato Fishers
Starting early with its livelihood programs for the fisherfolks, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources XII (BFAR 12) gave out bangus fingerlings to more than a hundred small-scale fisherfolks in Barangay Kalanganan, Cotabato City on January 09, 2013.
According to Ms. Halkat Ibrahim, City Fishery Officer of Cotabato, they made a thorough background checks to assure that all beneficiaries have existing fishponds where the fingerlings are to be dispersed. She further said that this is already the second time that they distributed bangus fingerlings in the city. Last year, a total of 120,000 fingerlings were distributed. This year, however, BFAR has already doled out 110,000 fingerlings to fisherfolks with a total fish pond area of 300 hectares and more are planned to be given out.
Mr. Romulo Diesto, Jr., one of the beneficiaries thanked BFAR 12 for the initiative of helping them in their livelihood. “It is indeed a great help for us especially that fingerlings nowadays are sold from Php2.50-3.00 per fingerling. It’s already a big ease from our budget,” Mr. Diesto added.
When asked about the status of the Bangus Industry in the city, Mr. Abubakkar Depatuan, Cotabato Fishery Coordinator, said that the production is indeed increasing which is a proof of its development. He further added that the number of fishpond operators who are now engaged in growing the said fish has also increased.
Though the bangus harvested are still solely sold in Cotabato markets, BFAR 12 and the Local Government of Cotabato see the city’s potential to become one of the major bangus producers in the country. In this regard that they are pledging their full support to the fisherfolks who are showing interest in bangus production.
Fingerlings distribution and dispersal are just one of the many programs persistently conducted by BFAR 12 under the leadership of OIC-Regional Dir. Ambutong K. Pautong who believes that production support services are vital steps to increase fish production in the region. He also believes that this kind of input assistance would also help in the livelihood of the fisherfolks.
BFAR 12 will continuously monitor this project along with the other livelihood assistance given by the bureau in the region.
