The National Brackishwater Fisheries Technology Center (NBFTC) is located at Sitio Iringan, Palsabangon, Pagbilao, Quezon. The center was established in 1978 under the joint project of BFAR and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). It was initially named as Brackishwater Aquaculture Demonstration and Training Center.

The land area of the center is around 50 hectares. The center’s mission is to increase fish production by strengthening the aquaculture extension service system through the development of brackishwater aquaculture technologies and disseminate them to government extension officers, researchers and fishfarmers.

The NBATRC has the following functions:

  • Conduct research and development studies on saltwater aquaculture species (e.g., milkfish, grouper, salt-tolerant tilapia hybrid, mudcrab);
  • Conduct training of field extension officers, researchers, fishfarmers and on-the-job trainees;
  • Conduct technical assistance to fishfarmers
