The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) has released the results of the 2019 Fisheries Scholarship Program Qualifying Exam.
Out of the 2, 354 hopeful students who took the examination on January 12, 2019 in designated schools nationwide, a total of 388 students had passed, qualifying them to take up BS Fisheries course under a full scholarship grant.
“The scholarship will give these deserving high school graduates the opportunity to pursue their dreams in the field of fisheries in leading state universities. This also gives us the assurance that the country will not run out of competent fisheries professionals who will work for the sustainable development and management of the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources,” BFAR national director Eduardo B. Gongona said.
The scholarship program is divided into two components: the Fisheries Industry Leader Grant (FILG) for highschool graduates who belong to the Top 10 of their graduating class; and the Fisherfolk Children Educational Grant (FCEG) for highschool graduates whose parents or legal guardians are registered municipal fisherfolk.
Aside from tuition and other school related fees, which will be paid directly to State Universities and Colleges, the future Fisheries students will receive a monthly stipend of Php 4, 000.00, a book allowance every semester, and upon near completion of the four-year Fisheries degree, an On-the-Job Training and Thesis Support and Graduation Assistance. Scholars who will graduate with honors and will top the Fisheries Board Examination will also receive monetary incentives from the DA-BFAR.
