Private Sector and DA-BFAR Award Fishing Boats to Fisherfolk in Eastern Visayas
Barely three months since supertyphoon Yolanda ravaged fishing communities in the Visayas, hundreds of fisherfolk have been awarded fishing boats through Ahon! Sampung Libong Bangka para sa Dalawampung Libong Pamilya Rehabilitation Initiative last weekend.
“When I learned about the Ahon!, I thought it would make my wife happier if we donated boats for her birthday. And true enough, it made her very happy,” said Sevilla. Their friends and colleagues knew about the initiative through them and decided to help as well, he said.
The following day, February 2, BFAR has met with another sponsor, Udomsak Aksornphakdee, to turn over 187 boats in Salvacion Island, one of the severely hit fishing communities in Basey, Western Samar.
Aside from fishing boats, the fisherfolk-beneficiaries have also received motor engines and 1,500 pesos incentive for labor counterpart. The beneficiaries said they will use the amount as start-up fund for fuel when they go back to fishing.
Contributions and/or pledges for Ahon! continue to pour in. Cash and in-kind donations from the private sector have already reached P3 million.
“The private sector’s support to Ahon! is overwhelming. They are instrumental to its success,” said Perez, adding that more boats will be turned over to the fisherfolk in the coming weeks.
BFAR personnel have conducted a random monitoring of Ahon! beneficiaries in Eastern Visayas. Of the 518 initially assessed, more than 50% have already completed rebuilding their boats while 17% are still on the process of repair.
The bureau, however, is continuously moving into areas which Ahon! has not yet reached to distribute basic boat-building materials like plywood, nails and, marine adhesives to the affected fisherfolk.
To date, Ahon! has rallied 7, 503 worth of fishing boat materials already brought down to fisherfolk-beneficiaries in regions 6, 7 and 8.
