BFAR3 CELEBRATES FARMERS AND FISHERFOLK MONTH
BFAR Central Luzon, led by Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz, kicks off the week-long celebration of Farmers and Fisherfolk Month today, May 26, in the Technological Outreach Station for Fresh Water in Looc, Zambales.
With the theme, “Pagpupugay sa Magsasaka at Mangingisda Natin, Tungo sa Sapat na Pagkain”, the event was highlighted with the installation of this year’s Fisherfolk Director in the person of Ka Tomas Payumo of Apalit, Pampanga. RD Cruz also spearheaded the introduction and experimental trial of the use of solar energy venturi aeration system as an innovative and economic strategy to double the stocking rate in small scale tilapia culture. Under current practices, farmers achieve approximately 5 tilapia per square meter. With this technology, the density can be doubled and is expected to result in adequate growth, improved survival and economic performance. Feedmix Specialist, Inc. is a partner in the conduct of the project and was represented by Mr. Norberto Chingcuanco during the program.
The day culminated in a tree-planting activity to rehabilitate the remaining open-land areas in the station with 100 mango seedlings evenly placed. Other activities lined up for the week include dispersal and awarding of input assistance in the provinces. Relatedly, the bureau has organized a photo contest open to student and amateur photographers in Central Luzon to underline the significant role of our fisherfolk in achieving food security.
