In order to prevent, deter and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, the BFAR 12 Fisheries Resource Protection Group (FRPG) led by Mr. Ronald Mañara has conducted vessel inspections at port, market inspections and seaborne patrols in the vicinity of Sarangani Bay.
Vessel inspections at port are conducted in the General Santos City Fishport Complex in order to ensure that only legal fishing boats are unloading fish. During the conduct of such inspections, all vessels at port were found to be compliant with existing fishery laws, rules and regulations.
Market inspections are conducted to ensure that illegally caught fish, such as those caught by the use of explosives, will not be sold in the markets. In all market inspections conducted, no illegally caught fish has been observed in General Santos City Fishport.
To ensure that only the legal fishing vessels are conducting fishing within Sarangani Bay, the FPRG also conducted seaborne patrols. So far, no IUU fishing vessel has been detected in Sarangi Bay.
