The Satellite Fish Health Laboratory (SFHL) Unit of the Provincial Fisheries Office of Misamis Occidental had been conducting the Monthly Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) monitoring and sampling every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Murceillagos Bay particularly in the chosen seven (7) samplings sites at Sapang Dalaga (Casul, Libertad, Caluya and Manla) and Baliangao (Naburos, Punta Miray and Northern Poblacion) since the outbreak of the Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning PSP caused by a specific species, the Pyrodinium bahamense var compressum, a gastrointestinal and neurological causing HAB species last September 2009.
The monitoring is done by the collection of the water samples for the initial quantification (cell density count) and identification of present planktons (plankton identification) and collection of shellfish meat samples to be forwarded to the BFAR Central Office for the analysis of Mouse Bioassay for the test of PSP.
Extended HAB Monitoring areas were established in Tangub City with (3) chosen sampling sites particularly in Migcanaway, San Apolinario and Silanga and also in Mariculture Park of Lopez Jaena with four (4) chosen sampling sites. The activities were conducted last April 14 to 16, 2020.
Despite the existence and continuing threat of the life-killing coronavirus, April J. Betonio and Jejomar D. Grupo, the assigned personnel of SFHL BFAR 10-PFO Misamis Occidental continued their monthly HAB Monthly Monitoring routine to provide further service to the people residing at the coastal areas of Misamis Occidental. #servingthepeoplewithaheart
