2017 MMK National Winner receives 8M for fisheries projects
The Municipality of Laguindingan receives a cheque worth P8million, part of the P30 million prize as the 2017 MMK National Grand Winner, on June 29, 2020, at the Laguindingan Municipal Hall, Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.
BFAR-10 Regional Director Teodoro A. Bacolod, Jr. personally handed over the cheque to Laguindingn Mayor Diosdado T. Obsioma.
The funds shall be used by the LGU to reduce fishing pressure along littoral areas increase/enhance fish s stocks for demersal species, increase fish catch to full-time fishermen, increase income for part-time fisherfolk, and increase community involvement in the protection/conservation of municipal waters.
The Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan or MMK is a national search for the country’s outstanding coastal community, with millions worth of fisheries livelihood projects waiting for the regional and national LGU winners. The contest is based on the following criteria: (1) No illegal fishing, (2) observance of a closed fishing season, (3) effective mangrove protection and rehabilitation, (4) Declared marine protected area, and (5) Clean coastal waters without any garbage or industrial effluence flowing to the sea.
