The Philippines, through the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), has been officially placed in Category 1 under the National Legislation Project of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

This status signifies that a country’s national laws fully meet the requirements for effective implementation and enforcement of the Convention. Moreover, it affirms the Philippines’ strong commitment to wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection, and compliance with international obligations.

CITES Secretariat has acknowledged that the Philippines established a comprehensive legal framework to regulate and monitor the international trade of endangered species, resulting in the country’s attainment of Category 1 status under the CITES National Legislation Project.

The recognition enhances the Philippines’ standing among CITES Parties and the international community, fostering greater confidence among global trading partners while supporting legitimate and sustainable wildlife trade practices.

BFAR, alongside partner agencies and stakeholders, underscores that this milestone reflects years of collaborative efforts to strengthen the country’s legal and regulatory systems. The Bureau remains committed to sustaining these gains and continuing to uphold the principles of conservation and responsible resource management.

The CITES Secretariat extended its congratulations to the Philippines and expressed its continued support for future legislative developments and improvements.
