A significant milestone in Philippines–Denmark relations was marked on June 24, 2026 with the signing of a Partnership Agreement aimed at advancing fisheries research, innovation, and sustainable resource management.

Building on years of coordination since the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in 2019, the partnership between the Philippines’ Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) and the Royal Danish Embassy Embassy of Denmark in the Philippines in Manila has led to the implementation of fisheries projects that aim to enhance the country’s research capabilities for stock assessment and technology validation activities.

Through this partnership, the Philippines stands to benefit from access to advanced fisheries technologies, technical expertise, and capacity-building opportunities that will strengthen fisheries research and management.

“This initiative aims to improve offshore fishing efficiency, generate scientific data to support fisheries management, strengthen the technical capacity of our personnel, and promote sustainable fishing practices through technology transfer and hands-on training,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel on his welcome remarks.

Moreover, the collaboration will support efforts to improve fish production and food security, promote sustainable fishing practices that protect marine ecosystems, generate reliable scientific data through fisheries surveys and assessments, and enhance fisheries monitoring and maritime awareness within Philippine waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

This milestone is especially meaningful as it coincides with the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between the Philippines and Denmark, highlighting the enduring partnership and shared commitment of both nations to sustainable development, innovation, and the responsible management of marine resources.
