The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) kicked off the Farmers’ and Fisherfolk Month celebration with the symbolic turn-over ceremony for the Mangingisdang Direktor Program on May 6, 2024 at the BFAR Central Office.

BFAR Officer-in-Charge Mr. Isidro M. Velayo, Jr. handed over the symbolic key of leadership to Ms. Lilia Macrohon Nuño, 2024 National Fisherfolk Director.

In his turn-over speech, he emphasized the importance of the program for the fisherfolk leader who will symbolically serve and assume the role of the bureau’s Director to understand the day-to-day operations of the agency and witness the implementation and dissemination of the key programs of the agency.

“Ang programang ito ay sumasagisag sa mas matatag na balikatan sa pagitan ng pamahalaan at ng sektor ng mga mangingisda. Ito ay isang napakagandang pagkakataon upang mas maunawaan ng dalawang magkabalikat ang kanilang ugnayan sa bawat isa. Maliban sa pagpaparangal sa ating mga lider mangingisda, layunin ng programang Mangingisdang Direktor na gawing mas malalim ang ang pagdama ng pamahalaan sa kinakaharap na hamon ng ating mga mangingisda”, he said.

Mr. Velayo will immerse himself in the fisherfolk community and engage in real-life situations. It aims to deepen his understanding of the challenges and experiences faced by fisherfolk communities.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nuno, a fisherfolk from Zamboanga Peninsula, who will serve as the 19th National Fisherfolk Director and the third woman National Fisherfolk Director for the entire month of May, exchanged the symbolic wooden paddle to Mr. Velayo which symbolizes the life and challenges of a heroic fisherman.

She will assume the role of the national director of the Bureau, familiarizing herself with the dynamics of government office operations, including administrative duties and meeting commitments, except for financial and policy-related matters.

The Mangingisdang Direktor Program is one of the flagship programs of the DA-BFAR in celebration of Farmers’ and Fisherfolk’s Month, which aims to strengthen the partnership between fisherfolk and the government.
