LOOK: The Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), as a longstanding partner in the conservation of the Philippines’ diverse shark and ray populations, joins the nation in celebrating Shark Conservation Week from February 27 to March 4, 2023.
As a kick-starter, a press conference was held in Manila on Monday, February 27, which highlighted the status and challenges in shark conservation, as well as the government support for shark conservation in the Philippines. Executive Director NGOs for Fisheries Reform Mayette Rodriguez, Executive Director and Chief Mermaid of Save Philippine Seas Anna Oposa, and DA-BFAR Chief Information Officer Nazario Briguera graced the said event.
The Shark Conservation Week (SCW) is a celebration of the biodiversity of the Philippines’ shark and ray species with a goal of passing a national legal framework, paving the way to healthier marine ecosystems and encouraging economic stability and sustainable livelihood. Serving as the highlight and culmination of this year’s SCW celebration is the conduct of the 4th Shark Summit–a two-day seminar-workshop where shark-related topics will be shared among stakeholders.
