BFAR conducts Workshop/Orientation and Oath Taking of CY 2013 Fisherfolk Directors Program
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), led by National Fisherfolk Operations Center (NFOC) Coordinator Ms. Marissa Albaladejo, successfully held a workshop/orientation and oath taking of the 9th annual Fisherfolk Directors Program for the year 2013 on March 3-6 at Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in Tagaytay City.
Almost 100 participants from 15 National Fisherfolk Director Nominees (from CAR to ARMM), CY 2013 Regional Fisherfolk Directors, Regional Fisherfolk Representatives, National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) Sectoral Council Members, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (FARMC), Regional Fisherfolk Coordinators/Regional Fisheries Operations Center (RFOC), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Central Office (BFAR-CO) which involved Information and Public Relations Group (IPRG) and National Fisherfolk Operations Center (NFOC), National Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (NFARMC) and Ecosystems Improved for Sustainable Fisheries (ECOFISH) attended the said activity.
The 2-day activity discussed topics on ECOFISH Project which was presented by Dr. Geronimo Silvestre being the Chief Party of the said project and included updates on fisherfolk settlement that was presented by Ms. Cyrus Pangan of NAPC on the first day, March 4. An election for the national fisherfolk director took place in the afternoon where Servando P. Toledo of Region 7, Cebu City won as the National Fisherfolk Director for 2013 by 7 votes against the other 14 nominees.
On the second day, March 5, Mr. Rogelio Amatorio (PAMPANO President, NAPC Council Member and 7th National Fisherfolk Director) presented the history of fisherfolk empowerment. This was followed by the oath taking of fisherfolk directors from both the national and regional levels.
The Fisherfolk Directors Program of BFAR is based on Department of Agriculture Special Order No. 88, series of 2005, dubbed as "Mangingisdang Direktor Para sa Mas Matatag na Balikatan" where national and regional fisherfolk leaders that have been chosen by their fellow fisherfolk leaders shall act as BFAR Director at the national and regional levels for the whole month of May to highlight the Farmers and Fisherfolk Month Celebration.
